I use a toothbrush to remove the loose stuff and then a combination of cotton balls and make-up style q-tips (one end is flat and the other pointed). Get them from a beauty supply of drug store. Both damped in denatured alcohol from the local hardware store. Don't soak them. I also use a make-up brush to knock the loose stuff off of lenses.
