I love my 5MP Mynolta A1 but its major drawback is a low resolution
electronic view finder which is what I think you'll find on the SX10 IS.
Another difference between SLRs and non-SLRs is phase detect autofocus
in SLRs and contrast detect in other cameras or in some SLRs when in
live view mode. Phase detection is faster and more accurate. The
Mynolta is great for macro since it's on full-time live view, has an
articulating screen and the short focal length lens means great DOF.
But live view and articulating screens are now available on DSLRs which
wasn't the case 3 or 4 years ago.

The suggestion to get an E-420 or E-510 (not avail. at B&H) seems a good
one. You can get an E-420 with 14-42 for $400 at B&H with free
shipping. On the other hand, I think you're shooting Nykon now so maybe
you can save on lenses if you're shooting the same brand. The D40 will
cost you $50 more than an E-420. It doesn't do autofocus with older
style Nykon AF lenses but that's probably not a problem for you. The
E-420 doesn't offer you any shake reduction but you can get that with
the Nykon if you're willing to pay for VR lenses.

I suspect the decision might come down to whether you can (or want to)
share lenses and whether you use any Nykon software. But if she's only
going to shoot JPEGs and only ever uses the single 28-80 equivalent lens
then it may make no difference about the camera.

Ooops. Dr. Flash just reminded me about TTL flash units. If you
already have one for a Nykon maybe she'll want to be able to use it too.
That's a big cost item and you can save by sharing... if you want to :-)
