Actually the Olympics rise steeply from the ocean to 8000'/2400m not unlike the Rockies' rise from the inland plateau. And they do it in a shorter distance as anyone who has hiked them can attest. The Rockies span nearly an entire continent though and the Olympics a smallish peninsula but give 'em a few tens of millions of years :-) The Olympics have much to do with the fine sunsets around here. They create a small rainshadow amidst the downpour and a break in the clouds for the sun to shine through.
