Hi Charlie,

You are right, it was for transporting a coffin. Many village churches display 
a list of past rectors and I am always surprised by 
how few names cover 800 years or so. Especially since my perception of the 
times covered is one of long periods of plague and 
pestilence with consequential short life spans.
