Now that I understand what it's doing I can use it more easily but I still don't like it. I think my first confusion point was not running sequentially through the images and just by accident hitting the couple of images that are wider than the others. This caused the left side of the thumbnail pile to be scrolled off my small screen and I didn't know it was there at first... images just seemed to disappear.
