If you've never been to Boston and think you're going to park somewhere
you may have another think coming. There may be a fair chance at the
Convention Center since there is a largish parking lot but it could well
be full. I've only been to the Convention Center once and that was to
take a group portrait of the company officers of a legal firm who were
attending a convention there. In scouting the place ahead of the shoot
when there was nothing much big going on I was able to find a parking
place but I would have been exhausted hauling all my gear to the place I
decided was good for the shot. I broached this problem with the company
and was pleased that they arranged a spot for me in a special VIP
parking area. Based on the change in the volume of people there during
the convention I'm not sure I'd have found another place to park. But I
didn't have to go to the public lot so I'm not really sure.

Also, driving in Boston is something to be avoided if possible. I lived
about 10 miles NW of Boston for 11 years and drove into Cambridge to
work. It's just across the river and I occasionally had to go into
Boston but not if I could help it. It's a complex mish-mash of one-way
17th century cow paths and I never did learn to navigate it without
getting lost at least once. Avoid it if you can.
If you have a hotel room in town and the hotel can provide parking just
leave the car there and take a cab or public transport to where you need
to go. If you don't have a hotel room yet consider staying outside of
town somewhere along the path of the "T" so you can catch a train into
town. But even that brings up another problem. You may not be able to
find a parking place at even the remotest "T" stops outside the city.
One of the largest lots is at the Alewife station at the end of the "red
line" in Cambridge and is served by Route 2. It has fairly good access
using Route 2 from towns to the north west but if you're not there early
in the morning you'll not likely find a parking place. But if Harvard
and other schools are still on Christmas break your chances improve.
It's also possible to stay outside the city even further by taking the
commuter rail into town. <http://www.mbta.com/>
A final word of warning about Boston parking. At least 10 years ago the
cost to use a public parking lot in the vicinity of Government Center
during the day was $4.50 per half hour. I shudder to think what it is now.
Lots of good places to eat in Boston. If you're in the vicinity of
Faneuil Hall (and you should be) you'll find a lot in a small area.
When there we usually stop in at Durgin Park. Decidedly unfancy,
shoulder to shoulder family style seating but good food at a modest
price. While there be sure to go into Faneuil Hall itself... that
hotbed of revolutionary rhetoric.

As Bill's reply hints, the Boston photo opportunity *is* the beaten
path. Have fun and don't drive the car if you can help it.
