Digital ICE cannot normally scan B&W negatives or slides nor Kodachrome
slides because of the silver content. But if having the IR clean option
enabled in VueScan causes it to hang then I'd say there is a bug in
VueScan. Possibly the reflection from the silver halide particles
(which look like dust to the IR channel) has it so bogged down trying to
clean what can't be cleaned that it's not really hung but instead is
stuck in a (near) never ending loop. Maybe if you let it run it would
finish in a month or two. Is the CPU utilization pegged at 100%? :-)
Seriously, I think there's a bug.
But some versions of Nikon scanners (and Nikon only) have an improved
version of Digital ICE (v4) which does allow scanning Kodachrome. I
don't know about B&W. Incidentally, the B&W limitation is for true old
style B&W, not the chromogenic variety processed as E-6 film.
