Perhaps overly harsh assessment from Dr. Focus on the freebee software.
CombineZM generally does OK (formerly CombineZ5) and is often mentioned
on the CHDK site as the way to go using the hack for focus bracketing.
I recall Dr. focus initially had trouble with it with his crabapple
blossom ? But the problem was one of the images was out of order---it
is very sensitive to that and the images need to be front to back or
vice versa. I recall his final result was nice.
Most of the focus stacking softwares have trouble with backgrounds with
specular highlights as they create bokeh that resembles CAT lenses. I
suspect all would be subject to that. It would be nice to see an A-B
comparison with CS4 with results/ease of use etc. I am not sold on CS4
yet, at least for this feature.

Excellent. You may have just convinced me to upgrade. I've tried focus
stacking with "CombineZ" but not always had very good luck.
