Ken:
Go to <applestore.com> and check out the Sale items link on the near bottom of
the left side of the page. There are several good buys on refurbished MacBooks
and MacBookPros. If you're not afraid of a factory refurbished job you may find
what you want at a reduced price.
Both my son and I bought refurbished Mac G5s several years ago and they are
still running great. About two years ago we bought new 17" Intel MacBookPros
(matte screens) and like them very much. They're not lightweight, but they are
well built and quite sturdy. Both the G5s and the MacBook Pros get a lot of use
in our photo business.
I run Parallels 3.0 on my MacBook Pro for the occasional Windoze (using XP Pro)
program such as the dictation software Dragon Naturally Speaking and a couple
of games I like. If you have any "must-have" Windoze programs, this is a good
combination. I find it very convenient to dictate a Word manuscript in Windoze
using Parallels, save it, copy it and then go back to the Mac side and paste it
into a new Word document. Being a "hunt and peck" typist, dictating manuscripts
saves me a tremendous amount of time and energy.
The only down side I find to using Parallels is the time required to open and
shut down Windoze -- especially when you have to wait for your protection
software (i.e. Zone Alarm, AdAware, etc.) to do its thing. You have to use
antivirus programs just like any other PC machine since Parallels requires that
you install Windoze software to work. The Mac is merely supplying hard drive
space for the Windoze program(s). I have a PC also, but I seldom revert to it.
Dragon Naturally Speaking can give you some "creative results" as it learns
your speech patterns, but that is easily corrected.
I think that you will really appreciate the Mac OS, if you decide to make the
switch.
