Fun...! From the same drop down menu (enabled through International
Preferences), while in Photoshop you can choose "Character Palette"
which is the charmap-equivalent program... which, if you are using
the appropriate font (which it advises you of), will let you get your
smiley faces, chess pieces, musical notation, etc :-)
I love discovering this sort of stuff!
