This week I succeeding in printing my first A3+ print, a goal I have had
for at least 25 years, at first I was thwarted by cost and film quality
and my ability, then over the years this changed to scanner and PC
hardware and then software, but finally two years ago the scanner, pc
hardware and software (ok I use a mac but same is true for both) reached
a sufficient quality and speed level for me to see the quality results I
knew was achievable.
This week I managed to get my dual monitor setup roughly matched, why is
that so difficult, I have a colour munki and calibrated both yet still
there is a difference in colour between them, I managed by adjusting
brightness and contrast on both to get them close enough for my wife and
I to be happy though we both prefer the main dell. Why does sRGB provide
such a different look on different monitors.
A couple of months ago I bought an epson R2880 and thought now I have no
excuse, what I find is that a print from the r2880 doesn't look so much
better than my cheap 890 photo but at least it will do A3+ and black and
white should look better, but I was disappointed that it was not 5 times
better as it is the latest technology and inks. I spent quite a few
hours trying to print from aperture and mostly the prints were dark and
if I increased the gamma they looked washed, but then I read than epson
have a plugin for photoshop so I exported from aperture to photoshop and
then used the plugin. Prints were still a bit dark so I lightened in
photoshop and then found they looked pretty close to the monitor colours
and not so washed out.
I selected an image from my library - it was an E3 image and I first
printed it at A4 then decided to unpack the E3+ paper and have a go,
foolishly I thought I would apply some LCE before printing it large, it
was an image of a child so it made it a bit harsh, still it came out
almost the right colour and brightness (close enough though for a
hobbyist like me).
so finally I made it, it has been a long and time consuming struggle,
which with more funds and time I am sure I could have finished much
earlier. Now I will search for a suitable OM shot photo as a next
candidate, maybe even one I took 25 years ago.
