Your lovely survivor zinnia reminded me of a favorite survivor and
goaded me to scan images of it. shown in this and the next three gallery
images

At a Zuikoholics meet in 2003, I noticed this Yellow Lupine growing on
the shoulder of the road outside the parking lot for the Tilden
miniature steam railway. I only noticed it from the car when we were
heading out for food and drink. I cam back a little later and took some
pics.
Later yet, I drove by and saw the shoulder had been mowed and the lupine
was gone. I was glad I had taken my images already.
But next year, there it was again, and for every year since. A very
persistent plant.
What's unusual is the color. There are lots of Yellow Lupine along the
coast. Not all that far far as the crow flies, but quite a different
climate. This is the only one I recall in the East Bay hills.
