Hmmm,
Good rants should be recycled now and again---I think I missed that
one.
All my print film goes to a reasonable good lab with a Frontier where
they seem to pay close attention for the most part---or they know it
will need to be re-done. (whether most of the images deserve this
attention is another question) The "look" of the film reflecting the
spectral sensitivities seems to come through with consistent
processing. Processing variables have the ability to massively swamp
these effects as you point out. Scanning and profiling eliminate most
of the differences as you already demonstrated by skillfully processing
my apple blossom macro shots taken with Portra 160 NC.
The spectral sens curves for the 100 UC

do appear nearly identical to the HD200 which may have been a tweaked
Supra 200 as best I can tell. The 100UC did seem much better to me and
I suppose they did improve it significantly.
I did get a couple keeper macro shots with the old-new Portra 400 VC.
I hope the new-new is even better. The UC 400 didn't work well for me
for macro at all.
I suspect I won't have to forfeit my "I Agree With Moose" T-shirt quite
yet.

Drat! There goes another favorite Moose rant ---
With color neg film, the results depend completely on what happens
between the standardized processing and viewing as a positive image. A
few years ago, I sent two rolls of the same film with similar subjects
to two different Kodick processing options. I seem to recall it was
160NC. The prints from Koduck Royal service through a serious photo
shop
were relatively well balanced, with moderate contrast and saturation.
Those sent to Koduck through a drugstore were entirely different, with
high contrast, wildly blown highlights and shadows and color saturation
that almost reached out, grabbed and shook me.
With a standardized work flow, their films will perform as advertised
relative to each other. With any auto color, contrast, exposure, etc
controls set, they may or may not look very different from each other.
If used as I generally do, with ICC color profiles, the color/tonal
output is all very close to the same. The only difference is in the
grain/accutance.
