Some of the research I have done on how to handle these cards indicate
that format is best. And there are some recommendations not to format.
For xD and SM cards formatting seems to be the safest. These cards are
not as forgiving as CF and SD cards.
Some say that formatting will eventually wear the card out. I have been
formatting after every use and have never worn a card out yet.
It is the times when I delete or drag and drop that I have had problems
with xD and SM cards. When this happens I have had to format in another
device other than the camera the card came out of. Sometimes I had to
try different card readers or a different camera. With enough effort
every messed up xD or SM card have been resurrected. I have also done
this for other people with good success.
It use to be that emails from Olympus tech support would contain a note
suggesting that all memory cards be formatted after each use for trouble
free operation.
