Here they are used extensively as a mulch for garden beds - quite
cheap and popular. Excellent weed control at around 100mm/4" depth as
it forms a 'wet pack' on the soil surface. Reduces the need for
watering too. Most popular are strongly coloured types like large red
gum chips which take a long time to rot. Softwoods are a little
acidic except for paths. Rough eucalypt mulch works well but has to
be replaced annually. It feed the soil but some nitrogen supplement
is required to balance the decomposition.
