I have traveled all of Route 66 a couple of times in the 50's. There
were lots of long barren stretches through Texas, New Mexico and
Arizona. The only difference I think was slower travel and no fast food
chains. But thinking of food along Route 66 reminds me of a story.
We were traveling from Battle Creek, Michigan to La Puente, California
to visit my grandmother. It was 1955 and I was 12. We had stopped at a
restaurant in Tulsa, Oklahoma for lunch. Being a typical mid-western
boy of the time and subject to my mother's meat and potatoes meals I had
never in my life eaten chili. When I saw chili on the menu I told the
waitress that's what I wanted. She looked at me a little suspiciously
and asked: "Red or green?" I said: "What's the difference?" She said:
"Honey, if you've gotta ask then you want red." :-)
