Several months ago I mentioned that my wife and I were planning to do a
'round-the-country tour and asked for suggestions of what we should see
and do along the way. We still don't really have much of a plan but the
time is drawing near since our departure time is likely on or just
shortly after Labor Day (Sept 1). We want to wait until vacationing
parents and kids have returned to home and school yet leave plenty soon
enough to get across the Rockies before snow fills the mountain passes.
Our general route is from Endwell, New York (near Binghamton) to Buffalo
to see our son, to Battle Creek, Michigan (where I was born and haven't
set foot for 47 years), thence to Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City and
Omaha (maybe passing by AG's place), then up through Sioux City and
Sioux Falls to pick up I-90 to start heading west to Seattle. Along the
way we plan to take in the major parks and sight-seeing spots like Mt.
Rushmore, the Badlands, Yellowstone and Grand Teton. We'll also stop in
Coeur D'alene, Idaho to see an old friend who I last visited on that
trip to Battle Creek 47 years ago).
From Seattle we'll head down the coast through Portland and then pick
up the coast road (101) to San Francisco and other points south until we
get to Oxnard, California where my sister lives. Then on to Baldwin
Park, California on the east side of Los Angeles where I lived during my
high school years.
Then to Henderson, Nevada (on the southeast side of Las Vegas) where my
dad lives. Then on to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona.
Then to Dallas, Texas to visit my two brothers. I'm not sure of the
route there but maybe through Gallup and Albuquerque, New Mexico looking
for remnants of old US Route 66 which I passed over several times in the
middle and late 1950s. Then to New Orleans, Louisiana (where I've never
been) and again not sure of the route. Possibly through Texas cities
Austin (where I've spent a fair amount of time on business), San Antonio
(where I lived for a year whilst in the Air Force) and maybe through
Houston which is another city I've never seen.
Then from New Orleans via undetermined route to High Point, North
Carolina (near Greensboro) to see my daughter. Maybe I'll even go north
up the Mississippi to Vicksburg before turning north east to North
Carolina. From my daughter's house we would normally go to Roanoke,
Virginia to pick up I-81 through Virginia and Pennsylvania back to New
York. But maybe we should take a different route... to do what?
Anyhow, if you've got suggestions consistent with this general route I'm
all ears.
Thanks,
Chuck Norcutt
