Hi Chuck,
Have seen some threads on pnet that the software automagically can
merge the images with either refocus or moving the stage. The Helicon
software is reportedly easier but may not be worth the price of
admission. With a very complex subject there may be too much ambiguity
as to what should be in focus and the software will surrender and make
a mess.
Perhaps that's it--perhaps not. I like Moose's analysis too--worthy of
a post from the long silent but missed Dr Focus.
Here are some tips from a link I posted before---check his procedures
and skip the comparison stuff unless interested.

Also form the help page---you may have read this but just in case:
http://www.hadleyweb.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/CZM/Manual/Stack.htm
Seems to work OK with autofocus bracket with g9.
Prefer T-S for OM but alas still groping for answers. May consider
one of these on front of the autotube with a custom stop down adapter
---perhaps another cacamami idea. Stacking is worthless in wind or
chasing critters.

Perhaps you could inquire as to what Dr. Focus thinks?
Mebbe should listen to Walt who said if its windy find something else
to do.

Moose's observation that moving the camera has a lesser effect on
magnification was an interesting and probably quite useful point. On
the more general subject of changing magnification here is how I
responded this morning to the same question posed by Jim Brokaw on the
Kiron user's list on Yahoo.
