your 50-200 is the equivalent of 400mm on a 35mm camera I'd be concerned
whether you could effectively utilize a longer lens. That's into the
range where vibration and atmospheric turbulence can start to cause
problems. You will at least need a sturdy tripod if you're going longer
than 200mm.
Except we don't know what body he's shooting. If it's a 510 or 3, the
IS would let him hand hold considerably longer in good light. I hand
held a zuiko 500mm mirror lens on my 510 with acceptable results.
