John, I too am putting together some left over bits and pieces for a
back up box. Started off with a nice case complete with blue lights
donated by my ISP. Thankfully they are easy to defeat and the case is
decent and free. I also ended up with an extra MB after the fiasco of
having to RMA the _3_ previous boards. They were going back and forth so
fast I guess I ended up with an extra one. I hope it works anyhow.
My question is why XP Pro64 and not Ubuntu or something else? I think I
will give it (Ubuntu) a shot and spend part of $135 saved on 4gb more
memory and some other goodies. About the only thing I'd use XP Pro64 for
would be photoshop. Is there any advantage other than the added memory
addressed?
On another topic I'm officially revising my review of the Samsung 204b
monitor. So far it has been a decent cheap monitor. Pretty tight viewing
angle but otherwise OK for a budget. I do like the 4:3 ratio and am not
a fan of the short monitors which are becoming the norm. (we can't
market them as 'short & squatty'....hmm... Let's call them Wide
Screen!) Anyway after I upgraded the video card the monitor now
randomly just blacks out. Sometimes briefly but sometimes I have to
reboot if ctrl-Q doesn't work. At first I blamed the video card or a bad
PCIe bus on the MB but a search turned up lots of similar problems with
this monitor. Maybe something to do with the timing of the digital
signal @ 1600x1200. (??) Analog works OK. Not an acceptable solution
though. Maybe the new ones have fixed the bug but I'd now get a 245T.
Not 4:3 but big enough to make up for it. Unfortunately 2x price of the
204b.
