I've been using a hand/wrist strap of this general sort for over a year
and am very happy with it. I find it quite comfortable to let 5D and
28-300 Tamron dangle from my relaxed hand, yet be ready to fire in a second.
There are several variants. The $16 version Dan linked to has a neoprene
cushion. It says so in the packaging picture and looks like others that
are neoprene. The cheaper one has a plastic cushion.
As you say, there are also real leather ones, which is what I use and
like. The two bottom plates on the ones Dan linked to are also to be
found with various different cushions and widths/stiffnesses of nylon strap.
Neither plate is perfect. The one with the tripod screw in-line does, as
Dan says, keep the tripod lens alignment correct. On the other hand,
it's close to impossible to eliminate some small flex where tripod/QR
plate meets bottom plate, as there is no flat surface. This may not be a
problem with the big, Arca-Swiss type plates. And, unscrewing tripod or
QR plate as often as not loosens the strap plate screw.
The strap with the offset tripod hole provides a better surface for
connection to tripod head or QR plate. And it stayy tight when the
tripod screw is unscrewed. So neither is perfect, but both are quite usable.
The first one I bought had the leather cushion, but with a thin, soft
strap I didn't like. I replaced it with something from the misc. straps
bag. I recently bought a cheap one with plastic cushion and the other
bottom plate, just to try out. It came with a much better strap. So I
now have a combo from the two - mix and match strap, cushion and bottom
plate.
