Depends on how you use the camera -- for point+shoots, they make sense
as a cheap, more compact [1] alternative to a case, because the screen
on the back is that much more exposed especially if the camera goes in a
pocket.
For SLRs, the chances of the screen getting scratched in transit are
smaller, because SLRs tend to live in a case when they're getting
carried around.
What I _would_ like is anti-nose-grease coating on the back screen..
