All this talk of black and white conversions brings up a question of
paper. I print everything on Epson Enhanced Matte or Archival Matte
or Presentation Matte or whatever it is Epson is calling it this
week. I realize that a matte finish brings with it an inherent
softness that a harder, glossier paper doesn't have, but when the
image is behind glass, I've found I don't much like the way a glossy
or luster surfaces look. YMMV.
So far, when printing black and white conversions, I've just let the
Epson 4800 go. It's got three black cartridges, and seems to do a
tolerable good job. Ran into a fellow up in Belfast this past summer
who does fine art stuff in black and white, and he uses the 4800,
too. His stuff looked better than mine does, but he's been at it a
lot longer. <g>
But I'm always curious about papers. I realize I need to experiment
on my own, but any recommendations would be helpful as a place to
start. Or, if nothing beats the Epson Matte, with the possible
exception of Epson Ultra Smooth Fine Art, so much the better.
