The sub- 1 millions came from one factory and the over 1m from another?
Daft I know but weirder things have happened.
I'd go with someone swapping out baseplates to get a clean one - even
on a 'mint' camera you get shiny marks and tripod marks.
New Leica M baseplates are stored and traded for that reason but they
put the serial on the top - even then, they can get mixed when
someone dings their precious M3 or IIIg and seeks out a better top
plate.
