As others have explained, one sees those abandoned farmhouses all
over Spain. I am not sure if it is the EU's fault--Spain has only
been in the EU since the 1980s, and a lot of these structures look
like they were abandoned long before that. I think it is simply a
matter of people leaving the land and moving to the cities, a process
that had been going on for decades.
