So, other solutions to resolution need to be devised. For example, in
increasing the pixel density on the Pentax K20D CMOS to 14.6 MP, Samsung
found how to make the circuitry smaller following Pentax design draft.
Therefore, the pixels can be the same size as a 12MP sensor fitting in
the larger space of an APS-C sensor, but are more tightly packed leaving
less air space between each pixel.
This gives less noise while retaining detail at ISOs including 3200 &
6400 in just early pre-production firmware than the Nikon D300, Sony
A700 12MP sensors, while having full 14.6MP. Production firmware when
released in March would only be better.

This differs from the new Sony A350 14.2MP sensor and its normal sensor
design that shows a very high amount of NR smearing details especially
at high ISO.
