It does not appear that any of the answers so far have directly answered
this question, although the answer is implied in them.
The camera is operated by a fairly powerful computer processor. The
lenses are operated by less powerful computer chips in them.
The firmware upgrades are only downloaded to one's computer as a way
station. The camera and any lens needing an upgrade are connected to the
computer and the Oly software on the computer transfer/installs the new
firmware for camera body and/or lens.
