Hmmm,
Below is an Oly add for the kit lens for the E-510. When I had pinged
OLY ages ago they implied the CPU in the Lens provided info to fix the
linear distortion and vignetting. There was a thread a couple months
ago about the DZ 50mm.
Some of the reviews put the lens on an optics bench sans body and
stated the results may differ than the DXO type of review that reviews
the lens/body system. This seems to be low hanging fruit for the
manufacturers that can design for the the best practical optics that
produce easily correctable aberrations and not necessarily the best
optics alone and thus save on weight/cost/size. Doubt they'll put a DSP
on board to perform deconvolution analyses and process their way to
more resolution for awhile at least.

"Engineered to be smart and tough. This lens is built to handle the
demands of every photographer. It provides images that are sharp and
colorful in a lens that is smaller and more portable than the
competition. All Zuiko lenses contain a built-in CPU that actively
communicates with the camera to correct any potential shading and
distortion problems. And it is user upgradeable. Something impossible
with film lenses."
