Lends further credence to Iwert's excellent suggestion that maybe the 
images are being recorded on a second card.  I don't know of anything 
that could instantly format the card or erase the images.  Both of these 
operations take a few seconds at least during which time the camera 
would be obviously busy.  I think Iwert has the best idea here.
