You could also check for 'CF lock' (or something like that) -- that's
what the E-3 uses to solve the problem where you're focussing on the
dog, miss slightly with the focus point, and suddenly find yourself
focussed on a tree in the background -- it says "if the focus distance
jumps too suddenly in CF mode, pretend it didn't and wait for it to come
back into range again".
(or something like that -- it's frustratingly difficult to find out
what any of these settings mean with enough detail to be able to predict
what'll happen, other than "probably something better")
