I'm leaning towards the sensors. I've noticed that digital responds
to bokeh differently than film. Even with the same lens, I see a
marked "step" in the fade. Instead of a linear fade out, it holds to
an edge before disappearing. This is greatly exasperated by modern
asperical-element lenses, but even my ancient lenses give me
different bokeh characteristics.
This is one reason, I learned, why the high-end medium-format digital
backs do not use microlenses.
