A gracious plenty, if memory serves. Wait! Memory doesn't have to
serve. I can look at the data. Yep, speeds of 1/1600. Ought to be
plenty fast enough.

I was on continuous focus and burst mode, so if the AF was doing its
job, I should have made a few work out.

Both ways, on and off. And I didn't track because the apparent motion
was more down to up with a little right to left. I figured regular
mode would be better. That could have been my fatal error, I suppose.

Affirmative. The old 50-200. One of the problems I encountered was if
I didn't have one of the autofocus points exactly on an approaching
bird (and these were _small_ at the distances where I started
tracking), the lens would go into hunt mode and the flight would be
past before I got it to settle down. Very annoying. Very, very
annoying. I hope the new 50-200 does better. But, with apologies to
Carrie Underwood, it will do better for the next guy, 'cause this
lens ain't gonna haunt me no more. <g>

I doubt it. Could be a case of asking too much of the camera and then
getting in a snit when it didn't do what I wanted it to do. So in
defense of the 510, I can say I got some very nice shots while in
Florida, many of them of para-surfers, which I became almost as
obsessed with as pelicans. Many were taken while enjoying adult
beverages on the balcony of the condo, so they include the surfer and
the sail, and the angle is such that there isn't much, if any,
horizon. Which I like, because winter water in Florida is beautiful.
Maybe this week I'll be able to get some of them up to the web site.
