I pay attention to weather reports as the very first step. Even then, with a
good weather report, I always carry two blankets with me in winter. I
wouldn't start on any trip like that without food and water in the vehicle,
and a large candle or two (matches) for heating the vehicle. I always carry
a cell phone, although there are areas around here that are beyond coverage.
Carry a tow strap. Take extra clothes, heavy hat, mitts, and insulated
rubber boots. Keep the gas tank full. And I drive a 4x4, and don't live in
the mountains. But I sometimes wander onto smaller roads, like this one this
week.
