I don't think I've ever bought any camera gear in S.F. I'm 45 miles
south. The two names I've heard are Adolph Gasser and Calumet. In Palo
Alto there is Keeble & Shuchat who have a pretty good selection but
not especially good prices. A little further south is San Jose Camera
who used to have low prices and a surly attitude (local version of a
New York discount store). Generally I buy from Adorama, B&H, or KEH.
Sales tax in the bay area is over 8%. It would be cheaper to order it
from one of "internet stores" and have it shipped to a friend's
address for your son to pick up. If you don't have time to work that
out, unless they've changed, San Jose Camera would be the cheapest
(about 60 mi south of S.F.).
