Okay, here you go -- with/without flash, near/far, and in the dark /
in the light. Noise 'reduction' turned on, ie second dark frame, or
whatever it means; noise filter turned all the way off. (in-camera NR
seems to work fairly well; setting it to 'high', re-taking the
dark_close_flash shot now, there's basically no noise that I can see).

Hard to say for sure, because I put a split-image katzeye screen in my
E-1. It's certainly doable, though, and I can hit focus fairly
accurately with just the matte in there. The change in focus <-> moving
the focus dial seems to be much the same as it was before, though I'll
admit I very rarely manually focussed the AF lenses.

Press the "AF" button on the top of the body to the left of the flash,
turn the dial on the back of the camera. (this button + the front dial
switches metering modes).
> 3) Firmware update on the E-330 provides the option of AF in LV-B

Yes, it's the same thing -- press the shutter, it'll drop the mirror,
focus, take the shot. It's not what you'd call _fast_ to do this -- with
static subjects, no problem, but I keep on trying to take baby photos
this way, and Oliver is rather more wiggly than is helpful.. :)
> 4) My 330 is permanently switched to doing all AF with the AEL button.
> I assume that this is still possible with the E-3? Is it?
Yup. Three possibilities here:
1. point camera at subject, press shutter release. Mirror drops,
camera focuses, camera shoots, mirror raises again.
2. point camera at subject, press AEL, release AEL, press shutter
release. This is the same as 1, but the "camera focuses" stage is
quicker because pressing AEL will pre-focus.
3. point camera at subject, press AEL, while holding AEL, press
shutter release. This locks focus, so the lag is minimised; I'd say 1/3
of a second or so, offhand, but I haven't been using a stopwatch or
anything.
Oh, and another first impression -- 5fps motor drive is _very_ nice..
It also looks as if there's some fancy EXIF data going on, because
Olympus Master tags shots from the same burst as being connected.
