I have previously seen a micro drive hardware failure (belonged to a
friend) but never personally seen a CF card failure until a couple days
ago. A SanDisk 128MB CF card I had given to my brother-in-law for his C
point & shoot has come down with 2 hard read errors. The card is
probably about 3 years old and hasn't seen much use.
First indication was that the camera complained about not being able to
format the card. I tried it on Winders as well and got the same result.
I tried running Lexar's ImageRescue 2.0 which claimed to successfully
format the card but then complains about two read errors on being asked
to check the card's health.
I had earlier tried a test version of another piece of file recovery
software which found lots of images so the entire thing was not toast
from a reading standpoint. However, it is toast from a practical
standpoint since it can't be formatted. Perhaps there's another piece
of software that could work some magic on it but since the card is
probably only worth about $5 I won't mess with it any more.
Just to let you know that, tough as they are, they do eventually fail.
