<snicker> Good point. I'm actually glad those pixel-peepers are out
there and remaining busy, because despite their best intentions, they
sometimes help a dense old ignoramus such as myself make decisions.
But only after much distillation and dilution of the technochatter.
(Or would one dilute and then distill?) Still, that said, I've hung
around enough shops and galleries (pun intended) to watch, oh, many
hundreds of people look through bins of photography, not to mention
stare at photos hung on a wall. And my impression is that only the
photographers among them give a rat's RIP about anything other than
the emotional impact of the image--or lack thereof. True, one must
bring a certain degree of technical proficiency to the print in order
to offer the customer an opportunity for emotional impact, but it's
still the impact that matters. Something has to grab them. Maybe it's
the image they wish they could take of a place near where they were
staying. Maybe it's the light on the water. Maybe it's the play of
light and texture. No telling what, but it's gotta be something that
grabs 'em by the short & curlies and won't let 'em go.
In one shop where I display my work, and also work as a clerk from
time to time, there is a 20x25 winter image hanging in the vestibule.
This image is the first thing customers see when they walk through
the door. I've watched people literally reel backwards upon first
sight. (Sadly, no one's bought it yet, at least not there, but they
do react, and they have purchased smaller versions.)
Not once have I heard a customer say, "Ah! Looks like a 4.9 megapixel
image. Olympus E-1, no doubt. Not worth bothering with." And _no one_
has ever deployed a loupe.
