Hi Tom,
I assume you mean the HL-2040 (USD$51.99 after rebate). I have one of
these. It works just fine! I used it to churn out typically 80-odd
pages a month last year as secretary of a organisation. Then, after
handing on that office, it was left idle for some time. After not using
it for some 2 months, I sent it a single page print job & that came out
perfect. Can't ask for more than that :)
the 'bad' news: 2500 page toner catridge is about 2/3 the cost of the
printer here (at buy.com it is USD$42). The photoconductor drum is
intended to last about 12000 pages, & is more expensive than the printer
at USD$80...
The only operational criticism (& at the price I'm being really mean!!):
I found that if I was printing double-sided manually - it is only a
single sided printer- say 10 or 20 pages at a time, if I didn't allow
time for the static to bleed off (laser printers use high voltage &
static attraction to make the toner image on the paper) before putting
it back in the tray, I had a 'repeating' image on the second page as the
drum didn't clean properly. Allowing 10 minutes between bundles of
duplexing or only printing single-sided, it always prints perfectly.
