Ouch. You have my sympathy. I doubt you will do it again regardless
of warning.
My routine is to load the images into the computer, check them, and
then return the card to the camera to reformat. Those tasks have to
stay together for me. No leaving images on a card in the camera or in
the camera bag.
Other people separate them different ways. Unused cards in one place
and cards with images to be downloaded in another place. Some people
put a removable mark on cards with exposures to be downloaded.
