Here all Panasonic products in the early '80's were branded National.
I used Nation VCR's in schools for many years and they were extremely
reliable compared to any other brand. The Panasonic brand name slowly
superceded for electronic products although not for other appliances
- I assume that they were trying to achieve a product
differentiation. However National appliances have a very low profile
here.
I assume that Panny are one of those trading houses that makes
nothing themselves but simply buys in and rebrands from specialist
suppliers - a normal method of business in Japan. For instance,
Mitsubishi had their name on everything from a VCR to an aircraft at
various times. I use and recommend Hitachi power tools but have seen
a Hitachi VCR. It makes for a certain flexibility in production and
sometimnes variations in quality over tiome and across lines.
