I can imagine what your friend's Spanish exchange student said. The
Hispanics in Santa Fe are largely Spanish people who are decended from the
original Spanish colonists who walked up the trail from Mexico City in 1610.
Many of them are as white as any other white American. That is the basis for
the racism here. The locals see themselves as pure-Europeans..white.
Mexicans are usually dark skinned. The Mexicans here are often seen wearing
T-shirts that say: "Brown and Proud", while the white Hispanics respond by
saying: "If its brown, flush it down".
It is amusing in a way, but I'm part Spanish and its a little embarrassing
to me to see 'my people' acting like that. I rather like Mexicans. Most of
them I know are real nice people, hard-working, and (don't tell me
girlfriend) Mexican girls are CUTE.
