Of course there is - Pascal worked that one out.
If you come to a fork in the road, you assume that you only have two
choices - left or right. Actually you have four - left, right, stay
here or go back.
Life is not binary, it's quaternary. There's YES - NO -
neither YES nor NO - both YES and NO. We get so blinkered by the
assumption that choices are either/or scenarios that we miss
opportunities.
For example, a Principal directed me to teach a subject where I had
no expertise. When I objected (on the grounds that I wouldn't do it
well) she commented that "We're teachers of children, Andrew, not
subjects." Smug cow. I responded, "Why can't I be both?"
If she'd been smart enough, she could have countered with, "If you're
not careful, you could be neither."
And eventually that was the choice I made - until a better offer came
along. So, for a while and part of the time, I'm in the third place -
BOTH.
