Isn't high speed flash sync still a big deal in fashion photography? I
assume they they still have the in-lens shutter 1/500 synch option?
I also wonder if it has something to do with color. Fashion and the
related clothes catalog photography are about the fussiest branch of pro
photography for accurate color.
The 5D may win Will's portrait color tests, but people change color and
the original isn't there anyway. But clothes, shoes, etc. are right
there for comparison and inaccurate color can cost big money. Ask a
catalog merchant about returns. It may also not just be about accuracy,
in the simple sense, but fineness of tonal graduation. I've read what
the researchers say about how many colors we can distinguish, but some
of those folks in the fashion trade aren't normal that way.
I notice the 1Ds III goes to a 14 bit color depth internally, up from
the 12 C has always used. Could that be to better compete in those markets?
