Yes, probably the firmware is stored in flash memory ... with  space
left over for user saved settings. If it weren't for upgradeable
firmware, they probably wouldn't bother with flash memory.

Other very different equipment runs the clock off of a button sized
battery but switches over to whatever other power is available when it
is available. The clock chips often handle small "non-volatile"
storage (static ram & battery power). For a camera, I would expect
them to push everything into a single CMOS ASIC if possible.

The first time I saw the flash when playing with the CF door made me
think I had left the camera on. I didn't have time to recharge the
battery so the oh, oh, made it stick in my memory.
