The lab I use tends to do this which works ok for some images but not for
others (especially portraits), unfortunately the scans they produce as a step
in the printing process seem to be "printer ready" so much of the highlight &
shadow detail in the negs has already been thrown away. The scans they produce
just have to be treated like "proofs" which means rescanning anything that
doesn't suit the lab's "profile". At least the negs are produced by a
standardised process !
