Actually, I discovered this trick last year, but just got around to
spouting off about it. The real point about this excercise wasn't
really about shadow detail, but turning a trashbin photo into
something interesting.

By design. The halos are due to the way RawShooter works--it has a
two-stage LCE built-in which you can't override. The garishness of
the photo was totally artsy.

Not bad. I was able to accomplish the same thing in the converter
using more conservative settings, but then realized that the photo
was boring, anyway. It doesn't do squat for me.
