According to somebody from Foveon I spoke to a long time back, Sony was
historically a leader in
small pixel (<3um) sensors, because of their mass production of video chips,
for their camcorders.
(These are less than 3um pixels). This is aparently why a lot of camera vendors
like
Oly,Canon,Nikon bought sony chips for compact DC's. More recently with the
huge volumes of camera
phones, other vendors like Micron and Korean vendors etc have got into the
small pixel (low cost)
market.
