I went through the exact same upgrade with the same scanner. It's been
years, so I don't remember the exact details. It was earlier than this
posted link, as Canon didn't say anything about ASPI at the time. In
fact, Canon US was completely useless and I too ended up at the UK site.
It was in the VueScan documentation that I learned about ASPI (and I had
been what I thought was all over the Adaptec support site without
finding it) I installed ASPI, VueScan found the scanner and I was happy.
I had never used the Canon software anyway, so I left it at that.
I hope the combo of ASPI and the latest CanoScan works for you with
these later instructions. If not, VueScan will.
I can also report that the FS4000, used with a later Adaptec card, works
fine on Vista with VueScan and a generic driver provided by VueScan. The
latest Adaptec driver I found on their site didn't seem to work right on
Vista, although it may later. It's clear that many hardware
manufacturers are still in the process of getting Vista drivers right.
Instructions for the driver provided by VueScan are in the Windows
Release Notes near the bottom of this page.

You could download the demo version of VueScan and install this driver.
It might allow CanoScan to see the scanner, who knows.
Good luck, and I would appreciate knowing how you got it to work when
you do. I still have the FS2710 and it would be easier to sell with
instructions for use with XP and perhaps Vista.
