Wayne, please contact me off-list. I'll see what I can do to kick-start the
repair process for you. I happen to know my counterpart there at Aliant.

I hadn't checked the size, it MIGHT be something I could download. My
connection, through Aliant, is quite a bit worse than normal dial-up. For
instance, whenever I connect, within the first 1 to 5 minutes, I have to
disconnect, then reconnect. I've been told the routers? connect in turns, so
reconnecting to gets a different router. This is because the first
connection, within minutes, comes up with errors and refuses to download a
simple page, or even sometimes all the email box. This happens 99 to 100% of
the time, and as I'm typing this, I am in the process of connecting for the
2nd time this morning. Sometimes I have to do this several times in the
space of 1/2 hour.
My telephone company basically refuses to fix the problem. I've spent hours
on the phone with them, trying to get through the menus to talk to a real
person, then being passed around to different departments, etc. They've sent
out servicemen several times, who sometimes identify some problems in the
lines - noisy lines. Then they promise to come back later and fix or replace
lines, but as far as I can see, they never do. For example, one repairman
found the overhead cable was damaged by birdshot, in the area just below my
house. It is something that happens, as people get aggravated at crows
picking at their garbage bags on pick-up day, and take a shoot at the birds
resting on the cables. I guess they don't stop to think that all those
little lead pellets mess up all the little wires in the cable.
The last repairman also identified some line noise on the line coming into
my house. He promised to come back in a few days. That was several months
ago, and I'm still waiting. This has been goin on for about 4 to 5 years
now. I can't overemphasize how absolutely terrible their service is. Having
a monoply in my area doesn't inspire them to do much better either. Their
current slogan is, "Aliant, Here For You". It is really a joke to me
everytime I hear it, as they sure aren't here for me. I've had to just learn
to laugh at their service, to keep blood pressure in check. At the same
time, I've had to basically give up a lot of surfing. For example, I've
pretty well given up on Yahoo mail, as their page is too intense to get it
all downloaded without error. Sometimes, not often, but depending on the
time of day, I can get it.
Anyways, this is pretty well OT. But maybe it will cause someone who might
otherwise take simple things for granted, to take time to be thankful for
basic things like a good internet connection, or a choice in providers. Not
all of us have it.
