While winmail.dat is an issue, it's not the issue that the Windows-friendly
encoding Andrew is referring to is there to solve. OS X files also have OS
X-specific features in the file metadata, and at least in Entourage, the
warning you get when you attach one of those files to an email with a
Windows encoding specified is that the OS X-specific information is going to
be lost. That's not the fault of Windows, except insofar as it can't deal
with OS X-specific features.
